It is a great book. I've read many of Sir Conan Dolye books but the most interesting book I've ever came through is The adventures of sherlock holmes. A masterpiece from Arthur Conan Doyle. The collection of stories is excellent and very interesting. Also refer to the great work from the same auther.. The hound of Baskervilles. What an absolute pleasure and brought back some wonderful childhood memories. I received my Kindle for Christmas and immediately looked for books to download and when I saw Sherlock Holmes I couldn't wait.

Having read several of the reviews on this page - i feel the need to intervene. Holmes is not a policeman or action hero - he is a private investigator. Therefore he investigates - as he comments himself he craves cases that are interesting not merely run of the mill murders, those he leaves to scotland yard. The true power of doyles work is the heroes brain - holmes uses his skills for deduction to solve crime not his brawn. Doyle's stories have aged; younger readers who crave big suprises, action, action, and more action will be disappointed with this collection. But if you're a voracious reader, or you appreciate every little Of course!

I have Doyle's entire collection at home, illustrations and all, and I keep it in a treasure chest. Arthur Conan Doyle was always a better writer of short stories than of novels. This first collection of short stories of Sherlock Holmes has always been regarded as the best, although I suspect that is more because of its novelty at the time of publication than because of any lesser quality in the later short stories.

Present day readers will be surprised at the selection of advantures and Doyle was obviously generous in his use of the term adventure. Five of the twelve stories in this volume do not involve crimes at all. Some of the others involve only minor crimes and, while Holmes does solve the mysteries to his satisfaction he very rarely "catches" the criminal in the sense of having him arrested or tried.

It says something about Doyle's perception of England that only three of the stories involve murder, and in each of the cases the murderer is either foreign or has spent much of his career abroad. None of this is meant to disparage Sherlock Holmes of his creator.

It is impossible to read this book without becoming involved with the characters of Holmes and Watson, or developing an admiration for Holmes'work. Each of Holme's cases at least those that we know of are always interesting. It's not action-packed, there are not that many chases through the streets of London and though Mr. Holmes packs a mean punch, he hardly resorts to violence.

What makes this great is Holmes' genius combined with loyal Dr. This collection of twelve Sherlock Holmes stories were originally published in the Strand Magazine. Get Free eBooks and book bargains from ManyBooks in your inbox.

Entertaiment without depth, no great stile in writing.

Sherlock Holmes mysteries are among the first I have ever read and I still enjoy them. Well as I said earlier, if you read him once, you want more of him Add your review for this title. Promote your book here.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume I

In my opinion, these attributes qualify as good things. The entire collected works are here in one volume, which I can keep in a single place on my bookshelf, and use as a single volume when I want to take the book on a trip or read the stories to my children. But I see that this is a matter of preference see my "cons" section below. See my photo for a better look.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Volume I

It's not quite as thin or glossy as bible pages, but it's on the thin side. Any thicker and it could never fit into a single volume.

Bar none best detective novel you can read. Please review your cart. It is a whole sherlock Holmes bundle and is pretty heavy. The pages are "different" than what you would expect the novels to be, whitish, thinner, can't comment if the quality is bad or not. My five star rating is for the writing itself, which is of course, practically peerless.

This Knickerbocker Classics edition is much more affordable, and has the added benefit of matching a large number of other collections of other famous novels. This volume is not very suitable for that. It's large and heavy and would be MOST awkward to read on the bus. I have attached a photograph to this product page so that you can get a better idea of how it looks.

I would say it's slightly smaller than most academic texts. Personally, that doesn't bother me. But older readers, children, or individuals with bad eyesight may want to look for one printed on a larger font. Again, to me, this is immaterial, but a large number of readers have become accustomed to Sherlock illustrations and take great care to find books that have certain iterations by certain illustrators, and so on. Keep looking if you want lavish illustrations.

I think what you get in this edition is a plain, no-nonsense, quality binding for those interested merely in reading.

Overall, I think it's a great edition for buyers with certain preferences. If it meets your criteria, I recommend it with five stars. Remember to look closely at the cover of all these "complete" Sherlock Holmes books. With the wonders of capitalistically fueled competition, each edition of all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is beginning to look more and more similar. Not all are created quite as equal as one would think, however.

Read on to find out more. In my quest to find the holy grail of Sherlock Holmes literature, aka; THE definitive collection of original, Conan Doyle penned stories, I actually ended up buying and reading and rereading 3 different versions. My assessment of all 3 is as follows: The Ultimate Collection - http: It DOES include all 4 novels and 56 short stories, but the book is all text, with no real illustrations to speak of. When I first purchased it as an ebook, it did NOT include all the stories, but before I was even finished reading it, a simple Kindle update added all the rest, making it certifiably "complete.

At any rate, the "Film and Television Adaptations" and Beyond the Canon" synopsis sections at the end of the book are also included, but do not appear in the other Sherlock Holmes collections. Kindle formatting isn't so good in this one, however, unfortunately. My five star rating is for the writing itself, which is of course, practically peerless. Volumes The Heirloom Collection - http: Most importantly, it does contain all 4 novels and 56 short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though not always in the exact same order as other editions -- making it a little confusing, when comparing different editions, to determine if all the stories are actually included and they really are.

Design wise, the graphic presentation font choices, layout, etc of this "heirloom edition" is superb -- making it clearly better in that regard than perhaps any of the "complete" Sherlock Holmes books currently available. The color illustrations aren't bad either, but there really aren't all that many for such a large book, filled with so many classic tales.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes (All 4 Novels and 56 Short Stories) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle UNBOXING

Good Kindle formatting overall, but not as good as it could have been. And it's the absolute best of the three, in my opinion. Kindle formatting is superb, and best of all, most if not all of the classic illustrations that accompanied the original, first run publication of each story are included. Some short stories even have up to three separate illustrations! So for my money, the Top Five Classics edition 3 is hands down the very best one currently available.
